Senior Yearbook Quotes Making Headlines
The timeliness and proximity of the senior Instagram photos in the Huffington Post article to our school's yearbook distribution made for a relevant discussion in whether students should have quotes under photos at all. Our school is a seven year old school that allows seniors to submit photos in casual clothing and less formal portrait styles.
The conflict between deciphering appropriate language/double entendre speech and students who quote others instead of writing a thought of their own has kept our students from taking on these senior quotes.
The female students making headlines in the past week have stirred the feminist pot of conflict in their schools. They have drawn attention to the school dress code as well as gay marriage through their small blurbs below their portraits.
The age of the young people making the headlines is in close proximity to my readers who are discussing these issues in their Government classes.
These female students have received thousands of hits on social media due to the unusalness of their quotes below their senior portrait. Of the two instances I've read about this week, the 2015 yearbook season is revitalizing some overlooked issues important to young woman today. This particular issue about dress code has been a hot topic at the high school where I teach over the past several years. An opinion piece was written about the topic on our website and this is the kind of article that may propel the topic to the forefront again.
*As an aside, I wrote this a few weeks ago when I was first reading through "What makes News" and had trouble posting to the blog. I'm thankful for the time to work through some technical learning this summer.
