The Phoenix Experience

Working in the multimedia groups for the last few days has been an awesome experience. The other members of my group were knowledgeable, patient, and each of us had something to offer, so completing the project was easy. More importantly, I value the opportunity to learn from my peers.

One of the units I want to teach next year will be a project very similar to this, so students have the chance to see how different types of media can contribute slightly different variation on the angle chosen to create a news package (a term I did not understand before this project). I particularly like the ways in which the different parts of our media package (or any media package) interact, the different ideas that are emphasized through repetition, and the “bonus” information you can include for those who remain interested by the end of the article.

One things I am excited to include in the unit is a viewing of the Cronkite School’s Heroin Project because it is an example of this cutting edge journalism and can serve as an example—along with what we put together—so students can see a spectrum of what can be done with what they have and what will be possible for them in the future as well.

  1. When time permits, I want to view Hooked too. Interested in how they cover the story.

  2. I, too, liked the idea of creating a multimedia news package, especially in today's world of converged media. Our experience will not only helps us to frame a lesson, but we will be able to better guide our students as well.
