Social Media and Me

I have always resisted being on any social network. Truth be told, I’m a very private person and only want to share directly with the people that I choose to. Being at the Reynolds Institute has forced me onto Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. I’m learning this week how these outlets play an importance in being a journalism teacher. And I add, I am still learning.

As of Thursday morning, I will take down my Facebook.  My students tell me they don’t use their Facebooks anymore anyway. It’s all Instagram and Snapchat for them.  Several still use their Twitters. I will keep my Twitter, I’m getting the hang of it and I like that it is brief.  That being said, Instagram and Snapchat (which I don’t have) seem even briefer.  The jury is out on if I’ll keep that Instagram.

I will stay my private self with a sprinkling of Twitter "publicness."

  1. Goal of privacy accomplished here, as I can't tell who this is without a sign-off.

  3. I like my privacy and space too, so I have never had a Facebook, and my Twitter has only been going for a year and in that I think of it as a persona for me. If I adopt Instagram or Snapchat I may think of those as vehicles for posting story ideas that I see. However, trying to get my students to "follow" me is out of my comfort zone. Privacy and space. I hope I can get over that. I'll tweet about it with #reynasu this year.

  4. I think a majority of us are still working on some aspect of social media. The rules with school seem to change every year and so does the popularity of one social media over the other. Keeping up is a challenge from a lot of different aspects. Good luck.

  5. Shetye,
I feel you. . . I have Facebook and Twitter. I often get annoyed with people's need to tell us everything about themselves. Without the stress of the real-world, it was fun being social on Twitter this week. I have never been an active user but played around with it this week.

  6. Although, I am comfortable using social media, I have always used a pseudo name. I did this because it allowed me to have a sense of privacy. I will admit, I was a little uncomfortable giving up my pseudo name (Michael Jordan Young) and using my christian name for this professional development. Now, I have to decide if I go back to being Michael Jordan Young or not.

  7. I understand the privacy piece. When I created my Twitter handle for the Reynolds Institute, I realized I needed something involving my name. Within an hour of creating my handle, three students had followed my account. It led to my first social media interaction with current high school students: I hope my students love my new Twitter handle.Yes, you found me. No, it's not creepy. And I promise not to follow you - that's creepy." It was favorited. When school returns next week, I will probably gain a few more followers. Hopefully, it will not continue to creep me out.

Kudos for stepping out of your comfort zone.
