#ShareaCokewithTheA (Andrea or Atlanta)

I'm Atlanta born and raised, so I had to represent the ATL, A-town, The A, Hotlanta...with a well-known local reporter and one of the most infamous things born and raised here- Coca Cola.
I use Brenda Wood's commentary on a 2014 Super Bowl Coke commercial as a hook to start off my opinion/columns unit. It works for many reasons:
It's a human interest issue and it's relatable.
It's a great example of a series. Her series is called Brenda's Last Word.
I like the headline: Coke stirs outrage with 'beautiful' ad
It shows that she doesn't just express her opinion but she digs for facts.
It demonstrates how a journalist develops his/her own style or persona (then we can talk about many famous columnists)
She got the most views and responses to this than any other commentary so she addressed it again after some 'backlash' (we watch that clip also)
Bonus- it gives me the chance to show them some 'history' in advertising with the 1971 Coke ad. We revisit this when we talk about ads and branding. They really enjoy logos, slogans, jingles activities. (that's another blog topic)
